The Cost of Running Track Trail® GPS Tracking for a Full Expedition Season
438 schools in the most deprived areas of the UK now offer the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. For many of them, the financial question around tracking is not whether it is useful (it plainly is) but whether it is affordable.
Here are the costs, if it's something you've been considering for your school or organisation.
Hiring a Track Trail® LTE device costs £16.50* for a Bronze or Silver weekend expedition. For a typical group of five students, that is just over £3 per student. For Gold expeditions of up to one week, the hire cost is £31.50 per device. Volume hire at ten or more devices brings the cost to £13.50 per device for a weekend, and £26.50 for a week.
Purchasing a Track Trail® Mini outright costs £85. The Track Trail® Max costs £125. Running costs are £9.50 per month when in use and £1 per month when dormant. For a school using four devices across a four-month expedition season, the three-year total cost of ownership is £892.

Prices include Ordnance Survey mapping all safety features, and a platform that can be viewed by as many staff as needed; we do not have a tiered pricing model. There are no per-user licence fees. No viewer charges. No software subscription. No support contract. All platform features, all OS mapping, all training, and all out-of-hours support are included in every hire or purchase.
Track Trail® has not increased its hire prices since inception. This was a deliberate decision. Lower prices mean more organisations can afford to track. More tracking means better safety on expeditions, which is at the heart of our mission as a business.
Alex Pringle of Pringle's Peaks admitted she had not investigated trackers earlier because she assumed they would be expensive. "Actually, I've been pleasantly surprised. They're worth the money."

For organisations moving from hire to purchase, Track Trail® actively advises customers when purchase becomes the more cost-effective option for their usage pattern. The transition point is clearly defined. A school hiring more than four times per year reaches the crossover point within two seasons.
Assistance with writing grants is available for organisations applying to government or donor-funded programmes (email wendy@tracktrail.co.uk to find out more). Tracking devices are a tangible, one-off capital purchase with clear safeguarding benefits, which makes them well-suited to grant applications.
