What tracking looks like on the ground

A Scout volunteer recently sent 20 young people out on a long walk. The goal was simple: give them real independence. This includes the time to navigate, make decisions, and figure things out for themselves.

"Having the trackers meant we could be confident that we knew where they were," they told us. "The maps are absolutely perfect. You can see all the routes and quickly reach and intervene if you need to."

The leaders did need to intervene at some points. A couple of groups went off route. With the platform open, the volunteer could see exactly where they were and get to them quickly.

"Without the trackers we would have definitely had a very different event. In all honesty, I'm not sure I would have been comfortable running it at all."

This leader wasn't inexperienced or unprepared. They were honest about the difference between hoping everything goes to plan and actually being able to see what's happening.

When one of the groups went quiet, they knew where to go. When a group drifted off route, they intercepted them early. The day went well for everyone, because they had real information to work with.
